When I was preparing for my journey into this foreign land I found myself looking up a lot of Aussie slang and watching movies like 'Our Lips are Sealed' to ease my transition into this country of weird talkers. Unfortunately most of what I expected and practised has not been even remotely applicable. The only time I have seen the word Sheila was on a postcard in a souvenir stall and I have learnt that an Aussie would never say 'shrimp on the barbie' because they aren't even called shrimp here!! Here is a crash course in the some REAL Aussie dialect;
shrimp = prawns
rock paper scissors = scissors paper rock
cotton candy = fairy floss
how are you doing? = how you going?
sweater = jumper
math = maths
University of Sydney = Sydney Uni
peppers = capsicums
cash back = cash out
debit = EFTPOS
candy = lollies
H = haich
cooler = eskie
you're welcome = it's ok
it's ok = you're alright
call me back at this number = call me back on this number
cell phone = mobile phone
call me back at this number = call me back on this number
cell phone = mobile phone
