The Great (Winding) Ocean Road

Melbourne had always been on my list of 'must-visits' before my Aussie Adventure came to a close and this past weekend I had a chance to visit with my friend Sofia (Sweden). Before we dove head first into the beautiful city we decided to take a day tour of the Great Ocean Road, the world's largest war memorial. This stretch of road was built to honour returning WWI soldiers and runs along the south eastern coast of Australia. We headed off from our hostel at 7:30 am with Kiwi guide Tina. The weather started off sunny and nice and slowly deteriorated throughout the day but in no way ruined the awesomeness of what we were able to take in. Here were some of the hi-lights:

Proof that the sun did show itself that day.

WILD ROOS! (which sort of look like deer when they are just hanging out like this)

Memorial Arch and the start of the G.O.R.

It was not a route for the soft of stomach! Curves on curves on curves.

Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree-eee (in Kennett River)

Caught this wild koala during one of the very few hours he spends awake and eating!

Made it to the '12' Apostles which there are actually only 8 of now
(sandstone has a way of eroding...)

Breathtaking, I can see why these were one of my Aunt Kris' fav Aussie views.

Loch Ard Gorge, part of shipwreck coast, mind the rocks!

And finally London Bridge, just a few years ago you could walk out to that rock!
There is also a group of little ferry penguins that reside here, unfortunately we weren't
able to stick around until after dark to watch them come in from the ocean.

Stay tuned for some more updates on my weekend entitled Mission: Melbourne!
